My passion for animals has been a defining part of my life, not just as a hobby but as a deep and ongoing commitment to their care, understanding, and well-being. Over the years, I’ve gained extensive hands-on experience, not only in daily feeding and interaction but also in exploring new species, incubating eggs, and nursing animals back to health. This journey has been filled with discovery, challenges, and moments of immense fulfillment.

One of the most impactful projects I led was during the pandemic, at the Longhua Temple’s release pond. These ponds had become a refuge for turtles released by well-meaning worshippers, but the reality was far from peaceful. The turtles were often bought from markets, many carrying diseases and injuries, and the stagnant water and lack of proper care only worsened their condition. Witnessing their suffering, I felt compelled to act. I reached out to my master, the temple abbot, who supported my efforts and arranged for temple staff to assist me. Together, we carefully rescued every turtle from the three ponds, examining and grouping them by their ailments—eye diseases, calcium deficiencies, fractures, and skin infections—so each could receive specialized treatment. It was a long and meticulous process, but the results were worth it. Once the turtles recovered, I took the next step, coordinating with a water circulation system company to install proper filtration in each pond. This transformed the stagnant pools into clean, flowing habitats, ensuring the turtles' long-term health.

During Shanghai’s lockdown, I also undertook a fascinating project—hatching Vietnamese fighting chickens using an incubator. The process required careful monitoring of temperature, humidity, and egg rotation, and it was incredibly rewarding to see the chicks emerge, healthy and vibrant, after weeks of diligent care.

My interest in exploring new species has driven me to study a wide variety of animals. I’ve raised beetles, crabs, and turtles, constantly expanding my knowledge and observing their behaviors. Recently, my focus has shifted toward reptiles, especially lizards, and I’ve developed an appreciation for their unique characteristics and needs. Alongside this, my experience with more common fish species has taught me the importance of balance and ecosystem management in aquariums.

These experiences have shaped my approach to animal care—not just as an owner, but as a researcher and advocate for their well-being. Whether treating illnesses, exploring new species, or creating better living environments, I’m driven by a desire to understand and protect the animals in my care. Each project, from the temple ponds to incubating rare chickens, has deepened my knowledge and strengthened my commitment to this lifelong journey.
